Bring Back the Rich Color and Lock Out Winter Moisture
Left untreated, an Ipe deck fades to silvery gray. We clean, brighten, and re-oil your Brazilian hardwood so the deep brown color comes back — and seal the board ends before Chicago's freeze-thaw winter sets in.
20+ years finishing Ipe & exotic decks
Silvered gray brought back to rich brown
Penetrating oils, never peeling film finishes
Fall oiling that locks moisture out of the wood
It's the annual care that keeps a Brazilian hardwood deck rich, deep brown, and protected — instead of weathered gray.
Ipe is one of the toughest decking woods on earth, but the sun still oxidizes its surface. Within 18–24 months an untreated Ipe deck fades to a silvery patina. The wood stays sound — this is purely cosmetic — but if you love that rich color, it needs a yearly reset. We clean off the gray and grime, brighten the wood to even the tone, and work a penetrating oil into the grain to bring the color back. It's the color-protection half of our IPE deck services.
Because Ipe is so dense, it demands hardwood-specific products and technique — the wrong sealer or a film finish will simply peel off. Not sure whether your deck needs a light re-oil or a full restoration? We'll tell you honestly at a free on-site inspection.
If you only oil your Ipe deck once a year, late summer into early fall is the smartest window — not spring.
A fresh coat of oil heading into winter acts as a moisture barrier through the wettest, most punishing months, when Chicago decks endure 40 to 80 freeze-thaw cycles. Sealed board ends and grain shed water instead of soaking it up, freezing, and checking. The catch is timing: penetrating oil needs daytime temps of 50–70°F and a dry window to cure, which in Chicago means roughly September through mid-October, about 6–8 weeks before the first hard frost.
That's why the best time to book is right now, in late summer. Calendars fill fast once the leaves turn, and once nights drop below 50°F consistently the oil won't set properly until spring.
Ipe is nearly indestructible, but its looks aren't. Regular cleaning and oiling heads off the issues Chicago hardwood owners call us about.
UV light oxidizes the surface and bleaches Ipe to gray. Cleaning, brightening, and oil restore the deep brown and slow it down.
Sun and shade weather boards unevenly. A brightener evens the color so the whole deck looks consistent, not patchy.
Ipe can leach dark tannins onto concrete and siding. Proper cleaning and finishing reduces the staining below your deck.
Humid Chicago summers leave a slick film in shaded spots. We wash it off and use a mildew-resistant finish for fall.
Unsealed board ends drink up water that freezes and splits the wood. Sealing the end grain is winter's best protection.
Poly, lacquer, and paint can't bond to dense Ipe and flake within a season. We strip them and switch you to penetrating oil.
From a straightforward annual re-oil to reviving a fully grayed deck, here's the hardwood care we do across Chicago and the suburbs.
A low-pressure wash with a pH-balanced hardwood cleaner lifts gray oxidation, grime, and organic growth — never an aggressive blast that raises the grain.
A hardwood brightener neutralizes the surface, evens the tone board to board, and opens the tight grain so the oil can penetrate properly.
On decks that have gone fully gray we sand off the oxidized layer where needed to bring the original color all the way back before finishing.
We apply thin, even coats of a hardwood-grade penetrating oil, wiping excess so it never gets tacky, with extra attention to the end grain.
We reset popped hidden fasteners, snug up loose boards and railings, and plug or swap the occasional damaged board so the surface is solid.
Skip the guesswork. We'll put your Ipe deck on a yearly cleaning-and-oiling schedule so it never has a chance to fully gray again.
Ipe is unforgiving of shortcuts. Here's exactly how we clean, prep, and oil it so the finish looks right and actually lasts.
We check boards, fasteners, and railings, test how the wood is absorbing water, and decide whether it needs a re-oil or a full revive.
A gentle wash lifts the gray and grime, then a brightener neutralizes the surface and evens the tone across every board.
Dense Ipe traps moisture, so we allow 48–72 hours of dry weather before oiling. Skipping this is the #1 cause of finish failure.
We work thin coats of penetrating hardwood oil into the grain and end grain, wipe the excess, and walk the finished deck with you.
