Deck cleaning and power washing, done the wood-safe way
Cleaning is the heart of maintenance, and it is where decks get damaged most often. High pressure furs the grain of cedar and pine and gouges soft boards; bleach streaks dense wood and kills the plants below. We wash at low pressure with a wood-safe cleaner, follow with a brightener that evens the colour, and let the deck dry for 48 hours before any coat goes on. Composite gets the same low pressure with a cleaner made for it.
A yearly wash is the cheapest thing you can do for a deck. It removes the mildew and dirt that hold water against the finish, and it tells us early when the sealer has worn on stairs and rails so a maintenance coat goes on before the wood grays.
