About This Job

What We Did

Cedar fence boards in Palatine take on a familiar look after a few Illinois winters — the grain opens up, the surface goes dull and gray, and without a good sealer holding things together, moisture works its way in a little deeper each season. This backyard enclosure ran 144 linear feet in total, a mix of longer boundary runs along the north, east, and west sides and a shorter south section that returns to the house. The scope was straightforward: clean the wood and seal it, with access driving the plan — the three boundary runs were interior-only, while the south return got treatment on both faces.

We started with power washing, running a cleaner and brightener through the wood to pull out the oxidation and open the grain back up before anything else touched it. Once the cedar dried down properly, we applied one coat of TWP 1500 Series oil-base semi-transparent sealer in Cedartone, working the interior faces of the north, east, and west runs and hitting both sides of the south section where we could get to it. The oil-base formula soaks into cedar well, feeding the wood rather than sitting on top of it, which matters for a fence that catches weather from multiple directions. Work moved steadily around the perimeter and finished clean.

Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Palatine homeowners researching Wood Fence Restoration.

How much does wood fence restoration cost in Palatine, IL?

This 144-linear-foot cedar fence restoration in Palatine came in at $2,395. Price is driven by the linear footage, the condition of the existing wood, and the finish selected — a heavily weathered fence that needs more prep work will run higher than one in decent shape.

How long does it take to restore a wood fence?

A project this size — 144 linear feet of cedar fencing — typically takes one to two days depending on how much cleaning, sanding, and board repair is needed before stain can be applied. Dry time between prep and finish coats adds to the overall timeline, so we always account for weather conditions before scheduling.

What's included in a cedar fence restoration?

On this Palatine cedar fence, the work included a thorough cleaning and prep of the existing wood, any necessary minor board repairs, and a full application of Cedartone stain across all 144 linear feet. The goal is to bring the wood back to a protected, uniform finish that holds up against Illinois weather rather than just masking surface grime.

How long does fence staining last on a cedar fence?

A properly applied stain on cedar fencing typically lasts three to five years before it needs to be refreshed, depending on sun exposure, moisture, and how well the surface was prepped before the finish went on. Keeping up with cleaning and recoating on schedule prevents the wood from graying and cracking, which extends the life of the fence itself. For a quote, call our Barrington team at (847) 979-9299.
