Painted wood railings have a way of becoming a recurring obligation — scrape, prime, repaint, repeat — and the homeowner in Downers Grove had reached the end of that cycle. The railings across the front porch and both rear concrete patio and stair areas were aging painted wood that had seen one too many winters, and the customer's main ask was simple: get off the repainting schedule for good. The three separate railing zones added up to 30 linear feet total — 6 feet at the front porch and 12 feet at each of the two rear areas — spread across a property that sits in the quieter residential grid west of Clarendon Hills.
We pulled the existing railings out completely first — top rails, bottom rails, balusters, posts, stair sections, and all accessible fastening hardware — and hauled everything off site before setting the new framework. Treated pine structural posts went in anchored to the existing concrete with concrete anchoring hardware, then we sleeved each post in Trex Transcend Classic White composite post sleeves fitted with matching base trim and post caps. Level railing kits handled the flat runs; stair railing kits were field-cut and pitched to match the angle of the existing concrete stairs. Tying the new system cleanly into the existing structure at each zone took careful fitting, but every section landed flush. The composite finish holds against weather without any maintenance cycle behind it, which was exactly what the customer came to us for.
