About This Job

What We Did

Whoever had coated this Vernon Hills deck before us hadn't done the wood any favors. The pressure-treated pine was carrying a failed finish from a previous contractor — not old enough to have fully failed on its own, just poorly applied — and at 620 square feet covering the floor, railings, stair treads, risers, skirting, and posts, there was a lot of surface area holding onto something that needed to come off before anything new would stick.

We started with a power wash, then worked through a wood cleaner and brightener to open the grain and pull out what the wash left behind. The floor got a full power sand; vertical surfaces — railings, posts, risers — got a lighter hand sand to prep without cutting into detail. While we had the deck apart from that angle, we went through and tightened loose nails and screws across the structure. Once everything was clean, dry, and ready, we applied one coat of Benjamin Moore WoodLuxe in Abbey Brown solid — brushed into the balusters and rolled across the field, keeping a wet edge through the stair section. The color went down even and the wood took it the way properly prepped pine should.

Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Vernon Hills homeowners researching Deck Restoration.

How much does deck restoration cost in Vernon Hills, IL?

Pricing is driven by deck size, the condition of the existing wood and railing, the number of boards needing spot replacement, and the finish selected.

Can you save an old deck instead of replacing it?

In most cases, yes — restoration is the right call when the structure is sound and the surface damage is cosmetic or surface-deep. On this Vernon Hills deck, thorough cleaning and prep brought the pressure-treated pine back to a condition where a solid stain could bond properly and deliver a clean, long-lasting result.

What's included in a deck restoration on a pressure-treated pine deck with railings and stairs?

The scope covers power washing and brightening the entire surface, sanding or scraping any peeling finish, replacing any boards that are beyond saving, and applying the chosen finish to decking, railings, and stair treads. On this project we finished everything in Benjamin Moore WoodLuxe in Abbey Brown solid, which gives uniform color coverage and strong moisture protection across the full 620 sq ft.

Do you strip the old finish first before restaining a deck?

Yes — skipping that step is the single biggest reason deck finishes fail early. We strip or sand down to clean wood, then neutralize and let the surface dry before any stain goes on, so the new finish bonds to wood rather than to old product. That prep work is what made the WoodLuxe solid stain on this deck lay down evenly across the decking, railings, and stairs. For a quote, call our Northbrook team at (847) 979-9299.
