About This Job

What We Did

Cedar weathers fast in Skokie, and by the time we arrived at this property the backyard fence had the dull, grayed-out surface that comes from a few too many seasons without protection. The enclosure runs 185 linear feet around the perimeter — north boundary along the back, both sides of the east run along the alley, south sections flanking the driveway, and a set of driveway gates at the corner. The fence heights vary by section, from four feet at the gates up to six feet along the alley, which meant the scope shifted as we moved from one boundary to the next. One picket had deteriorated past the point of cleaning and was flagged for replacement before we ever picked up a brush.

We started with a thorough power wash using cleaning and brightening solutions, working through each section and letting the wood open back up before we touched it with stain. The single deteriorated picket came out and a matching cedar replacement went in. Coverage varied by section — the north boundary got one side only, while the alley run, the south sections, and the gates were done on both faces. We masked the concrete driveway, the neighboring garage, and draped lightweight material over the south neighbor's garden before applying one coat of TWP 1500 series in Cedartone throughout. End grain and gate hardware got close attention. The work was coordinated for early October, giving the wood the dry, cooler conditions that let the oil penetrate cleanly before winter sets in.

Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Skokie homeowners researching Wood Fence Restoration.

How much does wood fence restoration cost in Skokie, IL?

Cost is driven by fence length, the condition of the wood, how many boards or posts need repair, and the finish selected — a longer fence in rough shape will run more than a shorter one that just needs a fresh coat.

How long does it take to restore a wood fence?

A project this size — 185 linear ft of cedar with repairs folded in — typically takes our crew two to three days from prep through final coat. Drying time between coats and the extent of any board replacement are the biggest variables that affect the schedule.

What's included in a wood fence restoration service?

On this project we handled the full scope: cleaning and prepping the cedar surface, replacing damaged boards, and applying Cedartone stain across all 185 linear ft. Restoration work covers everything needed to bring the fence back to sound, finished condition — not just a coat of stain over a deteriorating surface.

How long does fence staining last on a cedar fence?

A properly prepped and stained cedar fence typically holds its finish for two to four years depending on sun exposure, moisture, and how well the wood was cleaned before application. Keeping up with a recoat on that cycle prevents the deep weathering and board damage that turns a simple stain job into a full restoration. For a quote, call our Northbrook team at (847) 979-9299.
