About This Job

What We Did

A 215-square-foot deck in Downers Grove had reached the point where a fresh coat of stain alone wasn't going to cut it. The wood surfaces — floor, railings, stairs, skirting, beams, and posts — had weathered to the kind of flat, thirsty finish that soaks up moisture and holds it, especially on a deck with this much structure underneath. The homeowner wanted a two-tone refinish, a specific look that called for careful planning before a brush ever touched the wood.

We started with a power wash and thorough wood cleaning to pull the old finish and grime out of the grain, then ran power sanders across all the horizontal surfaces to open them up evenly for the new product. The vertical elements — railing assemblies, skirting, and stair risers — got Benjamin Moore Woodluxe solid stain in Stock White. The deck floor, stair treads, support beams, and posts were finished in Rymar semi-transparent oil-based stain, Hickory Bark, which let some of the wood character come through. Where the two finishes met, we masked and cut in carefully to keep the transition between white and Hickory Bark clean and defined rather than blurred. The homeowner paid by check and received the standard five-percent discount applied to the final invoice.

Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Downers Grove homeowners researching Structural Deck Repairs.

How much do structural deck repairs cost in Downers Grove, IL?

Cost is driven by the extent of structural damage, the number of load-bearing components that need attention, and whether any decking boards require replacement alongside the framing.

Can you replace joists and posts without rebuilding the whole deck?

In most cases, yes — targeted structural repairs to beams, posts, and framing members can restore a deck's integrity without a full tear-down. On this project we addressed the structural components directly, keeping the scope focused and avoiding the cost and disruption of a complete rebuild.

What's included in a structural deck repair job?

On this home we repaired or replaced compromised beams and posts, corrected the stair framing, and serviced the wood railing to bring everything back to a safe, solid condition. Structural repair work always starts with a thorough assessment of every load-bearing connection so nothing gets missed.

Do you need a permit for structural deck repairs in Illinois?

Permit requirements vary by municipality — some Illinois towns require a permit any time structural members like beams or posts are replaced, while others set a threshold based on scope. We're familiar with local requirements in the Downers Grove area and can advise you on what's needed before work begins. For a quote, call our Lisle team at (773) 997-1817.
